This week, Mark Hewlett Jnr entered the prestigious Scottish U16 Open at Bishopbriggs Golf Course near Glasgow.
With a field of 132 players from 15 different countries, all players had single-figure handicaps or better and the majority were either national or regional players.
Day 1 with blue skies but 25mph wind, Mark got off to a very nervy start when his shot into the par 3, 2nd spun off the green into the water and carded his only double bogey for the week. Still, he pulled himself together and shot a very credible +1, 72.
Day 2 was brutal with 36mph wind and rain and after going out in the worst conditions, Mark golfed his ball around maturely to shoot an amazing +2, 73. Only a handful of players shot less.
On day 3 with conditions similar to day 1, Mark started the day in 10th place. After a blistering start, he found himself in 2nd place with 9 holes to play and though he couldn’t replicate his 4 under start on the back 9 he finished clubhouse leader and finally 5th overall, which is such an unbelievable achievement.
