Success Amidst Unexpected Rain: Our Open Competition Highlights
09/10/2023Maisie Whittall played in a World Championship junior golf tournament on 25-27th July, held at Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen, Ireland, organised by Champion of Champions Junior World Golf. 250 junior golfers from over 40 countries traveled to the VIP invitational tournament having secured their places by winning qualifying tours in their respective countries.
Maisie competed in the Age 13-15 Girls category and played over 3 days on the Castle Hume course and the Faldo Championship course. The tournament was hit by heavy weather leading up to the event, and caused both courses to be closed which restricted the ability to play practice rounds!
The first round was played on the Castle Hume course, and Maisie got off to a fantastic start, despite strong winds and occasional rainfall, Maisie shot 73 to take the overnight lead by a single shot. On the second day, the players moved to the impressive lakeside Faldo Championship course, but the terrible weather returned. It rained relentlessly all day and night, with high winds, and caused the rounds to take over 6 hours! Despite the conditions, which pushed the scoring up throughout the field, Maisie shot a 78 to increase her lead by a further shot to take a 2-shot lead into the final day.
Day 3 was blessed with finer weather, although the sun shone on the Faldo course, the winds remained testing, and Maisie managed to close out her final round with an impressive 73 (1 over par) to increase her tournament lead to 5 shots, and secure the win.
Congratulations to Maisie on securing a World Championship title!
